In 1985, when she was at the peak of her career and feeling like she had achieved the ultimate success, Dr. Marilyn Joyce was diagnosed with melanoma. She was shocked to discover how serious that illness was, and as if that wasn’t enough, a week out of the hospital, she was rushed back in again with stage four uterine cancer. She was only 35 years old! Shocked and dismayed, she experienced what most advanced cancer patients do–denial, anger, resentment, frustration, and feeling like a victim. After she passed the initial shock of the diagnosis, she tried everything she could in search of a magic bullet. Yet four years later, she was in a wheelchair at 88 pounds, and according to doctors, with only a week-and-a-half to live.
Completely spent, she had no energy for anything…including walking! And as if cancer itself wasn’t enough, the stress and anxiety of searching for–and trying–every new treatment available was definitely taking its toll! She was stressed out, tired out, frustrated, anxious and depressed…and in constant pain.
At that point, the miracles began… With her finances low and not having eaten solid foods for months, she attended a home show that promoted a Vita-Mix machine, introducing her to cantaloupe ice–seeds and all. From that moment, her journey back to health began, first with the inclusion of fruits, then adding in vegetables, and eventually tofu, soy, and whole grains – in other words, whole foods in whole food forms – back-to-basics nutrition. The best part: almost all of the recipes only took 5 minutes to prepare!
At the same time, she attended a Dr Bernie Siegel event, where she learned about the power of “gratitude.” He spoke on that universal law that what we focus on expands. So Marilyn began refocusing her life with 5-minute gratitude breaks. And her life began to change.
Since recovering from those challenging cancer years, she has poured her heart and soul into learning everything she can about creating energy and vitality in only 5-minute segments throughout the day – often the only time a cancer patient, caregiver or healer has available at any given moment.
